The perfect place to stay when visiting Volcanoes National Park
We stayed here for 2 nights to start our honeymoon and the owners, Bob & Bonnie, were very accommodating and helpful with answering all of our questions. The place feels like home and is located minutes away from the national park. It is at 3,500 feet and in the rainforest so plan accordingly.
I saw another review that says it was damp and they were sick from mold. We didn't experience any of this and there is a gas stove that can be used to heat the place, we didn't need it. My guess is the reviewers had no idea of where they were staying (i.e. a rainforest) and wanted something that had climate control, and should've done their homework if they have allergies to a damp environment. This cottage is very much like an authentic Hawaii experience, and if you want a luxurious resort, go to Kona, or better yet, Waikiki. If you want a quaint, quiet, authentic place to stay in a rainforest in Hawaii, call Bob and you can't go wrong.
The Artist Cottage (11-3956 Nahelenani Street) is an awesome place to stay on the Big Island, if you want to visit the Volcano area. This Bed & Breakfast is on a private street, in the rainforest, but only about a five minute drive from the entrance to Volcanoes National Park. The owners, Bonnie and Robert, are wonderful hosts and attended to our every need. They warmly greeted us when we arrived, had a nice glass of wine waiting for us in the cottage, and gave us excellent advice on places to visit (and avoid) in the area. The cottage is very clean and comfortable, and extremely well-kept. The owners provided breakfast items, assorted beverages and a variety of snacks, which was really convenient. The kitchen is updated, with new appliances, so cooking meals was very easy.
The cottage has internet access, and the owners provide a laptop for guests to use, which was a nice benefit. The place also has a flat screen TV and Satellite service, which our kids loved. We are a family of four (two adults, two teenage boys), and the cottage was a perfect size for us. We will stay at the Artist Cottage on our next visit to the Big Island, and highly recommend the place. Visitors to this part of the Big Island should be prepared for rain, as the Hilo area is one of the rainiest places in the United States (the area is called a “rainforest” for a reason). If you want constant sun, then go to the other side of the island. However, if you want a beautiful place to stay in the rain forest, close to Kilauea, then you should consider this cottage. Our entire stay was brilliant.
Bob and Bonnie are most gracious hosts! They are very thoughtful and stocked the cottage with everything we could need, even a flat screen TV and Dish Network so my husband wouldn't miss his football game. The cottage is great and so convenient to the Park and to town. Plus they even let us bring our dog which is a huge plus! Thanks so much.
We stayed 3 nights at the Artist Cottage. The cottage was conveniently located right outside of Volcanoes National Park and was a charming, relaxing place to come back to after a long day. It had everything we needed. Bob and Bonnie were very thoughtful hosts - they really took good care of us. We really loved the kitchen and patio. So lovely. The cottage was perfect for our anniversary get away!
In life as we travel through, we are never sure who's path we will cross. We all are to very appreciative to have crossed your paths. Bob and Bonnie, we has stayed at places that are beautiful, but lack heart and warmth. We have stayed at places that have warmth, but lack charm. It is a wonderful thing to have come across a place that has both.
Thank you for creating such a wonderful place. We thoroughly enjoyed it! May you have much success here.
We definitely would stay here again. It's clean, cozy, and close to the Volcanoes National Park. We loved the cool weather, the surrounding fern forest, and the owners were very accommodating. Thanks again!
We stayed here for one night during our Christmas trip to Hawaii. Everything we needed was provided and more. Bob and Bonnie's cottage is conveniently located to Volcano village and to all the sites in the area. We were staying in Kailua but decided to take a trip around the island, but didn't want to rush things. I wish we had stayed one night longer. I would recommend staying at the Artist Cottage. You won't be disappointed. We spent a wonderful Christmas at this cottage. Bob and Bonnie were the best hosts and the cottage is beautiful, right down to all the details. We'll definitely be back!
We stayed at the Artist Cottage one month. Jan 12th - Feb 11th. It certainly exceeded our expectations. Our plan was to find a nice quiet cottage away from a city where we could hike, cook our own meals and relax. Bonnie and Bob helped us realize that plan. We would not hesitate to recommend the Artist Cottage and hope to return for another holiday again.
Spent 2 days in late February. The cottage is great. Almost everything is new. It is only a few miles from the park entrance. Breakfast is not served but everything you could ask for is available for your use in the refrigerator. The hosts are attentive and make every effort to please. They have provided supplies for anything you might need during the stay, including a computer and/or wireless access. We would go back anytime we are in the area. It was a little cold when we were there but there was plenty of heat available to be comfortable. Try it, you'll like it.
Our stay in the Artist cottage was warm and inviting with lots of extras. Everything was clean and fresh and the walls had owner Bonnie's beautiful paintings displayed making it unique and colorful. They even had a laptop computer to use. There were plenty of snacks and beverages if you forgot or didn't want to make a trip to the store. Also had lots of toiletries and rain gear. The entrance to the park is just minutes away, as well as some restaurants and small grocery store. Our host Bonnie even baked a pineapple upside down cake for my husband when she learned we were celebrating his 60th birthday. Bob & Bonnie were very thoughtful and friendly hosts. Being Kona residents, we'll be sure to return or send our friends their way!
In March 2009 my husband and I went to Volcano for three nights. We stayed here and had a fabulous time. The hosts Bob and Bonnie met us our first night and we spent some time chatting with them. They were very gracious hosts and have done a great job of creating a wonderful little getaway on the big island. The house was very clean and well stocked with lots of goodies! I am a firm believer in reading and writing reviews to decide where to stay on vacation. This is great place for couples or families with two kids. I definitely recommend the Artist Cottage as a great place to stay when you want a home away from home in Volcano.
Cute, cozy, well maintained little house close to Volcano National Park. Stocked with so many food and sundry goodies (candy, wine, crackers, fruit juices, aromatic candles, bathroom sundries) you will be amazed (better than my home!). The proprietors are very welcoming and enthusiastic when you arrive, and then leave you alone to enjoy (but are close by if you need them). What an unexpected gem for a last minute stay. The cottage is roomy, clean and nicely appointed. Innkeepers are delightful, friendly and very generous. The refrigerator and cupboards are stocked with everything you could want...... and more. Thoughtful touches everywhere and Bonnie's art is beautiful.
This cottage is more charming than the pictures can show. Bob and Bonnie, our hosts, were most welcoming and attentive. They have provided luxurious bed and bath linens and the kitchen is fully equipped with fine cookware, tableware and glassware. One could easily spend many days at this cottage in comfort. There are excellent restaurants nearby and of course Volcano park is very special! The birding and hiking is awesome, not to mention the lava flow. We intend to stay here again.
What a find! A gorgeous, cozy, comfortable little hideaway in the rainforest! There was every eventuality thought of - laptop with wireless access, food and drink a-plenty, the most delightful bathroom spa, with a multitude of towels and products. Truly a dream come true in paradise. Bob and Bonnie are so very welcoming and made us feel very at ease and at home. Awesome job at the highest level of hospitality. There's nothing to NOT like!
If you're looking for a great spot to relax while exploring Hawaii's Volcano National Park, look no further! Bob and Bonnie provide a homey environment with 5 star amenities like plush robes and towels, high thread-count sheets, a stocked kitchen, and stellar artwork (painted by Bonnie herself!) As newlyweds, my husband and I were looking for comfort and convenience as we hiked around the park. When we arrived, we were warmly greeted and showed the way inside to the cottage. Wine and chocolates were waiting for us as were a number of other foodstuffs. A computer and internet allowed for us to do lots of planning for the days we were there. Most of all we were very touched by the warmth shown to us by the hosts. Bob and Bonnie worked hard to make our experience very special and they are both caring and down to Earth individuals. Stay here, you won't be disappointed!
It was our honeymoon so I tried to book very special places for us. The Artist Cottage exceeded our expectations totally. All the details that you took care of made me feel better than at home or at a fancy hotel.
We were looking for a quiet, comfortable, relaxing and romantic getaway on the big island, and The Artist Cottage exceeded our expectations. The cottage is very clean and well appointed. Our wonderful hosts Bonnie and Bob succeeded in meeting or anticipating our every need. Secluded yet easily accessible, the location is perfect for visiting the Volcano National Park, hiking the rain forest, or touring other areas of the island. It definitely felt like a "home away from home" and after a week we really hated to leave. We will definitely be back, and highly recommend The Artist Cottage to anyone looking for a delightful getaway.
